I beleive the war could have been prevented if people didn't have differences. But they did and those differences were conflicting and were going to lead up to a war somehow. I suppose if the Arch Duke hadn't been assasitated, there would have been a smaller chance of war, but it happened and we can't change the past

I agree with Katie. It also ties back to 9/11. We couldn't really stop what was happening, and we didn't know it was going to happen.
With the assasignation, well, they couldn't have stopped that either. They didn't know it was coming.

This comic might be a good example.

I agree with Katie and Laura. I think that at this time there was alot of tension in the world. It was building up like a pile of dry pine needles. The murder of the Arch Duke was the "spark" that sent the whole thing "up in flames", but I think that it would have "burned" eventually any way. So I think that the war couldn't have been prevented, but it could have been "postponed".

I agree with Amy, things were piling up and something had to "spark" it. What I do think is that some of the issues could have been peacefully resolved, but only to an extent. The Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary tended to oppress many groups of people and gave them an unfair say in the runnings of the country. But I do think that if they weren't so belligerent in their actions, certain issues could be resolved.

Sadly, I also agree with my classmates! (there is no variety in this discussion!) Whether or not the Arch Duke was murdered, there probably still would have been a war. Though sometimes we wonder whether war is necessary, many times we wonder this after a war is already started. Without the assassination of the archduke there may not have been a war, so there may not have been a resolution to the political unrest between the countries.

I do believe that WW1 could have been prevented! It could have been prevented by the countries settling things with negotiations. That way lives couls have been saved and a lot of $$money$$ could have been saved!

I agree with the others as well, and that the archduke's assasination didn't really start it, BUT if the assailant/assasins had died when they took the cyanide and the athorities hadn't talked to them of the reasons they killed the archduke then the war MIGHT!!! not have started at all.

Well,(sigh...), I think that the war couldn't have been prevented. I think that some people think that the only thing that started the war was the assasination the the Archduke. In my eyes, there was so much unrest leading up to that time. The Archduke's assasination was like taking the cork out of a Champagne(spelling???) bottle, everything kind of in a way exploded out after that!!!
Maybe if he hadn't been assasinated, there wouldn't have been a war!? But I have to say that there was SO much conflict going on that it was kind of inevitable...

well(it's horrible to say)but I think the war connot have been prevented. There were just to many main or central powers that wanted to take over each other so tha war couldn't have been prevented. It's not like you could just have them sicn a treaty saying that nobody can take over another country. People would still make alliances behind others backs to try to take each others over. Eventualy they would try to take each other over. Also, the countries hated each other to much that a war would eventually break out. That's what I think.

I think it could have been avoided because if the Archduke hadn't been killed the war would have never started since that assasination was the trigger to World War One.

I do not think that world war 1 could have been prevented, because even without the assasination of archduke ferdinand, there was alot of tension between all of the eastern european countries.

Krista said...

yeah i pretty much agree with nat. i think that even though the arch duke was assinated the countries still had their differences. just because the arch duke's assination started it, if that didn't happen another event later on probably would have triggered the war.

You could say that the war could've been prevented if everyone worked out their problems with words not violence. But in this world that just aint gonna happen. people are to stubborn and arrogant to work things out. if one country does one thing to another, they just get madder and madder till it breaks out in war. not that im saying thats how WW1 started but its just that some people would rather work things out with guns then words.

Well it would have been hard for it not to happen because of all these alliances that were forming...and after the assination of the arch duke...well...pretty mcuh what everyone else is saying.and back then nobody know that a WW1 was going to happen to try to stop it some way(which i dont know how they would have done anyways!)

i think the war could not have been prevented.
there was conflict throughout multiple countries as it was and the assassination of the archduke sent it over the edge.
it made countries choose sides.

I don't think it could have been because there was so much tension between the countries.

I believe the war could have been prevented if the archduke Ferdinand wasn't assassinated. I think that, because then there wouldn't have been all that tention from the murder, so then there might not have been a war.

i don think it could have been prevented the war was going to happen anyway because if the archduke wasnt assinated there would have been another event to spark the war the countries just needed a reason i think

Eric said...

I think that the war could have been prevented because the main cause of the war was the death of the Archduke.

I think that World War I couldn't have been prevented because it was pretty much going to happen anyways because of all of the tension (like almost everyone else said), and the Archduke's death was only the event that made everyone get past their breaking point and no one could handle all the tension, so a war started. I think that if the Archduke wasn't shot, something else would have started the war.

History Quotes

We can learn from history how past generations thought and acted, how they responded to the demands of their time and how they solved their problems. We can learn by analogy, not by example, for our circumstances will always be different than theirs were. The main thing history can teach us is that human actions have consequences and that certain choices, once made, cannot be undone. They foreclose the possibility of making other choices and thus they determine future events.
-Gerda Lerner

History, we can confidently assert, is useful in the sense that art and music, poetry and flowers, religion and philosophy are useful. Without it -- as with these -- life would be poorer and meaner; without it we should be denied some of those intellectual and moral experiences which give meaning and richness to life. Surely it is no accident that the study of history has been the solace of many of the noblest minds of every generation.
-Henry Steele Commager

Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.
-Robert F. Kennedy
