Why did the govermnent divide the land between the Jews and the Arabs so poorly.
Do you think that the government could have forseen what would happen when they divided up the land? Do you think it would have made a difference if the government had divided up the land differently? EXPLAIN.

Ryan, GREAT QUESTION! What are your thoughts!
Personally, I think that the U.N. had to know that conflict would result, as the creation of the state of Israel required the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
But, I do not know if the U.N. realized the depth of the conflict that would result, the resentment that would be created between the two nations, and the length the conflict would last. They were simply trying to give something to the Jews that had suffered during the Holocaust to provide them with a place they could feel safe and consider their own. Little did they know the region would transform into a place of immense conflict and hatred because of these actions.
I 99.7% agree with Mrs. Link, she hit the major root of the conflict and the flaw of the UN's plan to give the Jews a safe haven. I personally don't think that Palestine could be split up better or worse than it was. Palestine was a long, narrow country and was very uneven with the Mediterranean Sea, mountains, deserts and limited resources. The UN couldn't split it up properly in an organized way if they actually wanted to keep the two sides equal, so in this case it is as good as it could possible get. However, because of the awkward splitting up, that meant that there was no neutral zone except for Jerusalem to cross, and that was soon to become a non-sovereign nation because of Israel invading it and the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The Israelis forced the Arabs into areas that they did not want to go, like trying to force an energetic child to go to bed at 4:30 pm, it simply won't happen or work. That was the true flaw of it.
I know that the UN could have forseen this problem but I think that they overlooked it. I agree with Mrs. Link and Sam D.
I think that If the UN had divided the land better it would have helped a little bit, but not a lot. Moving in the Jews would still involve moving out a lot of Arabs and that would involve a lot of hatred and would eventually lead to war.
