History Quotes
We can learn from history how past generations thought and acted, how they responded to the demands of their time and how they solved their problems. We can learn by analogy, not by example, for our circumstances will always be different than theirs were. The main thing history can teach us is that human actions have consequences and that certain choices, once made, cannot be undone. They foreclose the possibility of making other choices and thus they determine future events.
-Gerda Lerner
History, we can confidently assert, is useful in the sense that art and music, poetry and flowers, religion and philosophy are useful. Without it -- as with these -- life would be poorer and meaner; without it we should be denied some of those intellectual and moral experiences which give meaning and richness to life. Surely it is no accident that the study of history has been the solace of many of the noblest minds of every generation.
-Henry Steele Commager
Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation.

Surrounded by war should not be what "normal" means to those kids on the video. Everyone should be able to feel safe. If someone is also exposed to war, it can effect the way they act as well. They might start using violence to solve all of their problems. Sep. 11th can remind you to want to keep something like that not to ever happen again and make you want to keep peace.
Cora is right about the September 11th thing. We can look back on it and use the experience to make sure that nothing like that ever happens again. I do not want revenge for it like some of the kids in the video. I just want peace.
When normal means being surrounded by war, you don't think anything of the war. The kids in the movie didin't kow anything but war. They didn't know what it was like to feel safe. They just got used to it. Those feelings resulted in alot of violent thoughts and actions. It made them want to take revenge. It also made them scared of the other group.
I think when 'normal' means being surrounded by war- that area obviously needs help! No one should have to live with the fact that they could be bombed any minute and no one should ever know just war.
This could affect people's ability to think of peacful solutions. If all they see is war- then they will think thats the only way to solve things. They maybe haven't even heard of a peaceful solution!
I think that September 11th makes me want peace even more. It's just wrong that innocent civilians have to die beacause of other peoples strong beliefs.
What happens when "normal" means being surrounded by war is that you then never know what being "normal" really is. The impact of living with daily conflicts affects people's ability to find peaceful solutions is that they never really know what peace is like, and might just try to fix a few things, not the whole conflict. The events of September 11th have influenced my ability to be a peace-maker by not trusting the people and scared that they might do it again.
I thnk when being surrounded by war is "normal", it would really change who you are. I think your personality would be a lot more voilent. You would be so used to gun shots and people dying that it wouldn't even seems like a big deal anymore. I think September 11th has made me realize how many innocent people die because of conflict and war, and want pointless fighting to stop.
War should never be 'normal'. A child should be able to live life without a constant threat! If a person is surrounded by war, they have less time to have fun, and the children will grow up faster. When surrounded by war, violence can grow and peace will be hard to find. The events of september 11th have only made me want to make peace. I'm tired of the war and I just want people to get along.
When normal is being surronded by war you see killing everyday and then it makes you meaner. It makes you want to kill people different than you. With all the killing going on around you it makes it harder to be nice and peaceful to others. Since September 11th it makes people want to make peace so another terrorist attack does not occur.

Being surrounded by war is an un-natural thing to experience, especially at such a young age. I think that it definatly gives the kids a new perspective on what war really is like, living with it everyday. Like Cora said, it might have them think of violence as the answer to their problems. Whereas, other kids might look at that time as a chance to make peace.
Since I can't remember a whole lot about 9/11, I think the Iraq war influences me more. Just the fact that hundres of thousands have died (on both sides) makes me want to stop the whole thing and go back to a peaceful relationship with Iraq. I think that watching that video really influenced me also, just learning about the kids over in Iraq and other countries who have gone through the same thing, that it's not right for them to be suffering because of others beliefs.
I think that when "normal" means being surrounded by war, then the life for those who are living that "normal" life will surround themselves in war in the years to come just because that is what they are used to. I agree with cora in that if they are always surrounded by war, then war will have to solve all of their problems, and peaceful solutions will be hard to come by. I dont know how the September 11th events have influenced my ABILITY to be a peacemaker, but they have greatly influenced my WANT to be and make others be peacemakers.
When normal means being surrounded by war it means those people are living in a costant state of fear of being hurt or killed. That should never happen to anyone exspecially when the rest of the world could be doing something to help stop it. People eventually get use to it and make less of an attempt to stop and make peaceful solutions and more of an attempt to help their side win. September 11th made me want to be more of a peace keeper because I don't the next generation to have to deal with something like that when we have the power to make peace.
I would think that your senses would be a lot more prone to assuming the worst. You hear a stick break and you dive under a truck afraid for your life a terroristic threat is about to occur. I would think with your senses out of whack, it would further complicate the struggle called life. I really don't like to think of myself as a peace maker. Its one thing to be neutral, its another thing to go into a crossfire unprotected.
War is not a "normal" thing. It is a horrible thing. No kid should have to go through what the kids in Palestine/Isreal go through. They should have somewhere where they can feel safe and secure. War can interfere with their learning abilities and the way to think staight. September 11th can help some people relate to these children if they lost someone on that day. It can remind us to help out others from around the world and keep them safe.
When "normal" mean being surrounded by war, people will begin to feel it is what has to be going on all the time. If someone was born with war all around them, then they will feel it is almost (in a way) necessary! When you live around war, you can't see peace as possible. It will be hard to make good peaceful decisions w/o thinking that you can fight it off! Seeing Sept. 11, I know now what CAN happen. I see that we need to keep peace in order for those things not to happen!
When "normal," to the kids, is surrounded by war, they think that this is the way things are supposed to be. Like when we are driving around in our cars and eating 3 meals a day, we think that this is normal for every where in the world, when in 3rd world contries, many kids die from starvation every minute, let alone many people driving a car! So to them, when they think of the rest of the world, they think war, fighting, and killing.
When fighting is all they know, peace may be hard to think about, or how to find it. Knowing their situation, they may think it is too big for them to tackle and give up. Prejudce may also be a big hill to get over before they can think about trying to find peace in their country.
When 9/11 happened, after, there were many occurences of prejudce of anyone from the middle east. That extends into the war in Iraq and Sudam Husien.

When your constantly surrowended by war it is the only thing your used to. Your only used to solving things with guns and violence. So when ever you come across a problem one of the first things that will probably come to your mind would to pull out your gun and solve it right then and there! So being surronded by war diffenitlly changes the way people think!
September 11th makes me think of all the innocent people that had to lose their lives. So i would want to make sure nothing like that ever happens again.
When "normal" means being surrounded by war, you would live in fear and hate and it would make your personality more violent. I don't think anyone should have to live with war being "normal", and you wouldn't get to know what is considered "normal". When you live with daily conflict, it isn't as easy to make peaceful decisions because all you know is war and hate. The events of September 11th have influenced my ability to be a peace maker because I don't want anything like that to ever happen again anywhere so it makes me want to be a peace-maker.
